Our Winter Routine

I’m writing this for me. To remember what our days were like when they were little.

7:00 Baby wakes up between 7 and 7:30 in the morning. I pick him up, nurse him in bed, and take him to the potty.

7:30 I pass my 3-year-old’s room on the way to the potty. I turn his light on, and say, “Good morning, good morning! How did you sleep?” He potties, then joins us in bed. We snuggle up in our pajamas, read the bible passage that we’re working through, and wake up slowly.

8:00 We have a standing call with my mom, the boys Ouma in South Africa. She takes out library books to read to the boys, and we catch up.

9:00 We have breakfast together. We have eggs for breakfast every morning. There must be 100 ways to eat eggs. Fried eggs, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, poached eggs, eggs benedict, egg bites, French toast, omelets, frittatas.

10:00 Baby take a morning nap around ten o’clock. I set my toddlers clothes out on his bed, and he gets himself dressed while I’m putting Baby down. Every now and them he’ll come out with something on back to front. As long as it doesn’t look too uncomfortable, I don’t mind. While I’m rocking Baby I read a psalm for the day, and pray through it. After that I read my bible reading for the day. This is a really sweet time of the day.

10:30 Once Baby is down, I quickly ready for the day. I always feel like the day is going well at this point. Its 10:30, the Baby is down for a nap, we’ve read the bible, eaten breakfast, and we’re out of our pajamas sitting at the table working on our homeschool.

11:30 Baby wakes up. We snuggle and nurse while my toddler is either wrapping up homeschool, or playing independently. After that we get ready for the activity of the day.

On Monday, Wednesday and Friday, we go out. On Tuesday and Thursday, we stay home. This feels like just the right balance of not feeling too cooped up all winter, while still enjoying the slower winter days.

Monday – Library

Wednesday – Children’s Museum

Friday – Grocery shop

12:15 We’re ready to go! Why does is take this long to leave the house? It just does.

12:30 – 1:30 Out the house activity (On Wednesdays we stay out a little later, at indoor play) or playtime with mommy.

1:30 Lunch time. If we’re running a little behind schedule, we do lunch in the kitchen. I put Baby’s booster seat and tray on the floor, and my toddlers step stool next to it. I love those kinds of days.

2:30 Both the boys are napping! As much as I like to take this time to rest, something that helps our evenings is cooking or prepping dinner as much as I’m able to during naptime.

4:00 I wake our toddler up. We snuggle up on the couch, and read books until Baby wakes up. It’s winter, a lot of snuggling is happening.

4:30 Baby is up! My toddler flips through picture books, and waits patiently while I nurse Baby. After this we keep reading until daddy comes home. My toddler loves to sit and listen. Baby, on the other hand, is up and down. Sometimes he’ll turn pages, sometimes he’ll rip pages, sometimes he’ll play on the floor. He’s just a baby.

5:30 We sit down to eat dinner at the table as a family. With a toddler and a baby this goes as you can imagine. A little loud, and a more than a little messy.

7:00 Bath time for the boys. Our bathroom is right outside our bedroom door. My husband and I get Baby ready for bed together, while James plays in the tub a little longer. I nurse Baby to sleep, and my husband gets our toddler ready for bed.

They brush teeth, get pajamas on, read the bible, and practice memorizing the books of the bible, and pray together. Then after one more potty (toddlers!) he gets tucked in. Usually Baby is down, and I’m there to catch the end of the night time routine. I lie in bed with him for 5 minutes, and then the light goes out and I kiss him goodnight.

8:00 Both boys are tucked in bed.
